Today, on World Radio Day, we celebrate the power of radio and its role in bringing people together. It is also an occasion to look back at how swissinfo.ch began... with radio.Begiing in 1935, special programmes for the Swiss abroad were broadcast over short wave. Balthazar Burkhard was in the right place at the right time: Be in the 1960s. The city had a lively bohemian scene, and was a magnet for radical artists and ideas that culminated in 1969 in the anthological exhibition, "When attitudes become form" at the Kunsthalle Be. That's also the moment in Burkhard’s five-decade career to which the Fotomuseum Winterthur is now dedicating a comprehensive retrospective (until 21.05.2018).Having leaed the trade with Kurt Blum, one of the most important Swiss photographers in the mid-20th century, Burkhard started to travel in the bohemian circles of Be. Soon, he was part of the entourage of Harald Szeema, who directed the Kunsthalle Be from 1961 to 1969. During those years, Szeema captured the zeitgeist of radical political and social movements that also touched the arts, and Burkhard’s photography was closely coected to Szeema’s work.The Kunsthalle Be welcomed all those radical ideas, up to the point when Szeema felt it was time to break with the established artistic practices, and make a proper manifesto out of an exhibition.

Switzerland’s Federation of Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) supports a proposal to do away with mandatory licence fees for public service broadcasters, which will come to a nationwide vote on March 4. Two of its members sat down to discuss the issue. The SME umbrella organisationexteal link is up against an alliance of most political parties, parliament, the govement, trade unions and most sectors of the business community, who recommend voting against the initiative. But it is a political force to be reckoned with, representing about 300,000 companies grouped in 250 trade associations.The federation spearheaded a campaign to try to scupper a reform of the public radio and television funding system in 2015. Switzerland has one of the most generous, state-funded victim support services in the world. However, it doesn’t benefit everyone: Swiss people who live abroad and their relatives – as well as Swiss tourists – who are victims of crime are falling through the net.While assistance to victims in Germany, for example, is almost entirely dependent on donations, the system in Switzerland has been a public institution for the past 25 years.Victims of a criminal offence in Switzerland are supported in three ways, according to the so-called three-pillar modelexteal link. Not only do they receive free medical, psychological and legal support, but they are also protected during the criminal proceedings and receive damages and remuneration if the perpetrator and insurance companies do not recompense them sufficiently. At 91, she's the oldest elected politician in Switzerland: Marlies Näf-Hofma from Arbon in canton Thurgau. And she's still going strong. Swiss Public Television, SRF looks back at an often controversial political career. The Davos sledge has become a part of Swiss heritage(Adrian Moser)
The small wooden sledges were originally intended for transporting goods until a carpenter launched the “Davos sports sledge”. The museum-piece mode of transport has since been a fundamental part of Swiss wintertime and carpenters like Paul Burri are keeping the tradition alive.It gets quite cramped in Paul Burri’s small carpentry workshop in Lohnstorf, canton Be, at the start of winter. Everything is geared towards one thing – sledges. Sawn wooden parts lie ready in one coer. In another, finished sledges are stacked almost up to the ceiling. Outside, the little street where Burri works and lives is covered in snow. It is the same little street that Burri raced down on a sledge with his brothers during his childhood. The local authority’s road patrol used to spray gravel on the hardened snow to make the surface safe. But the Burri boys made themselves a plough to get rid of the speed-curbing grit and carried on sledging. Falconer Ulrich Lüthi spends part of his time with his birds of prey hunting rooks in Swiss towns. swissinfo.ch spent a day watching them in action. Lüthi’s birds sit on the back seat of his car, letting out the occasional high-pitched screech. In the front, a falcon’s hood decorated with feathers swings from the rear-view mirror. On the car’s dashboard, his key ring - a miniature falconer’s glove - gives away his passion and profession.Lüthi, who lives in canton Be, hasn’t had a holiday for at least 15 years. But he’s not unhappy about this.“I have found my path in life,” he declares. Several years ago, scientists welcomed the increase in the number of rooks in Switzerland. When the Swiss athletes march into the Olympic stadium in PyeongChang, South Korea, for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Games, they will wave a rectangular flag – proportions of 2:3 – in keeping with the other nations.This is one of the exceptions when the Swiss flag is not square. This was decreed by the Lausae-based Inteational Olympic Committeeexteal link (IOC), which manufactures all nations’ flags. “The IOC decided, begiing with the Athens Games in 2004, that all flags would have the same rectangular format,” writes a spokesperson.

The number of Eritreans applying for asylum at the Swiss border has fallen dramatically in recent years. In 2015 there were 8,523 new requests, whereas in 2017 there were just over 400. (RTS/swissinfo.ch) This is explained by the changing asylum situation in the Mediterranean and Italy, but also by a more restrictive Swiss reception policy. In 2012, Switzerland was the most popular country among Eritreans. It accounted for 37% of all asylum applications made by Eritreans on the European continent. Five years later, the situation looks quite different. Last year, Switzerland received only 12% of these requests. There were fewer applications than in Germany (36% of requests) and in Italy (23%).According to the Aargauer Zeitung newspaper, the Swiss Foreign Affairs Minister Ignazio Cassis is plaing to visit Eritrea to assess the situation and discuss it with the local authorities.

Around 170 workers are being drafted in to the central Swiss village of Göschenen to build the new Gotthard road tuel, but there's controversy over where they should stay. (SRF/swissinfo.ch) The Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) wants to build a container village to house them, but many locals would prefer to see old hotels renovated, thus breathing new life into the village in canton Uri that has seen better days. Just under 450 people live here, compared to 1,300, 50 years ago.In 2016, voters backed the plan to build the second road tuel through the central Swiss Alps, one of Europe’s main north-south links for cars, buses and trucks. The tuel will end in Airolo in the southe Swiss canton of Ticino. Construction will begin in 2020. The 2.8-billion-franc ($2.9 billion) project foresees the building of a second tube to allow the renovation of the existing tuel, built in 1980. After the second tube is completed in around 2030, the parallel tubes are projected to each carry only one lane of traffic in each direction.

Following the death of Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Swedish fuiture retailer IKEA, a closer look at how his products influenced the way in which people live today in Switzerland. He was one of the richest people in the world, and his family remains the wealthiest in Switzerland – as reported by Swiss business magazine Bilanz in November. After Ingvar Kamprad retued to Sweden, his sons Peter, Jonas and Mathias continued to run the business from Switzerland. At IKEA, Kamprad remained steadfast in his goal of bringing quality products to people of limited means. "A beautiful house and lovely life. A better place for children to grow up," he wrote in an inteal training brochure for IKEA workers.This remained the core of his credo. In order to make stylish fuiture affordable, customers have to pick up the goods themselves and put them together at home. In a boardroom on a boat moored off Geneva’s Quai du Mont-Blanc, Jean-Claude Biver is explaining his first success in business, furiously thumping the table to punctuate his words.In the early 1980s, the luxury Swiss watch industry faced a near-existential crisis: Japanese manufacturers had threatened to render mechanical watches obsolete by introducing cheap, more accurate quartz models, and sales told accordingly.Swatch’s founder, Nicolas Hayek, played the Japanese at their own game, launching Swiss-made $50 plastic quartz watches in every colour. In 1981, he had just bought the rights to Blancpain, a defunct Swiss mechanical brand. Peter Aeschlima is the mayor of Trub, a small town in the Emmental region between Be and Lucee. In his auto repair shop he fixes everything from lawnmowers to trucks. The 19th century Swiss novelist Jeremias Gotthelf would have loved this suy afteoon in quiet and quaint Trub. The village is surrounded by green hills, and smoke is rising in the distance. "Because of the storm," explains Peter Aeschlima. Looted Nazi artefacts on display at the historical and folklore museum in St Gallen will be handed over to the true owners at the end of this month, and then auctioned at Sotheby's in London. (SRF/swissinfo.ch) The two 17th century oamental silver and gold-plated ships were plundered from a German-American Jewish art collector. They were made in 1630 by the German craftsman Georg Müller from Nuremberg, and have been valued at over CHF1 million. The museum could not afford to buy them. The ships are among 140 objects donated to the museum in 1967 by entrepreneur Giovai Züst, who had started his silverware collection in the interwar period. They originally belonged to Emma Budge, a wealthy German art collector from Hamburg who took American nationality after marrying banker Henry Budge. She owned a collection of 2,000 artworks including fuiture, textiles, sculpture, goldsmith’s work, paintings, porcelain and earthenware.When she died in 1937, the Nazis forced her executors to sell her collection. The 46th edition of the ‘Prix de Lausae’ Inteational Ballet Competition kicked off on Monday. This year, 74 young dancers from 16 countries are participating in the prestigious competition. The final will be held on February 3. In this year’s edition, there are no Swiss participants. However, two Swiss-based candidates, a Japanese and a Belgian, both from the Ballet School Theatre in Basel, are taking part.An abundance of Asian dancers characterises the competition. Some 19 South Koreans, 10 Chinese, and 9 Japanese account for half of the overall participants. Paths to becoming a professional ballet dancer in Asia are not plentiful. So, many young dancers from the region come to the Lausae competition seeking an opportunity to study abroad at prestigious European ballet schools or with ballet companies.
